Transition Lenses change colour with the amount of UV light that is being transmitted. The more there is the darker colour the lens will go. The less UV light around the clearer it will be.
There are both advantages and disadvantages to photo chromic lenses. The main advantage is that they will darken into a sunglass when exposed to UV light, thus obviating the need to carry a separate pair of sunglasses for protection against harmful UV rays from the sun.
The main disadvantage of photo chromic lenses is they do not adjust immediately. It could take up to two minutes for the lenses to completely change from light to dark or vice versa. Another disadvantage for some users is that they will not darken when worn inside vehicles because the glass blocks all of the UV light.
